Welcome to the City of Palm Springs, " Like no place, else." 

In the world of film and fame, Palm Springs has been Hollywood's back lot since the 1930s. Besides being an outstanding vacation destination, films, television series, commercials and photo shoots have been successfully produced here for years. 

Palm Springs’ unique and diverse architecture, landscape and locations provide spectacular opportunities for filming and photo shoots. From scenic snow-covered mountains to desert oasis, from mid-century modern architecture to wild-western desert, Palm Springs offers a stunning variety both indoors and outdoors.  Palm Springs has over 350 days of sunshine and is less than 2 hours from LA, which makes Palm Springs the perfect filming location.

Film Policies

Do I need a Film Permit?

Unless you are filming in a licensed film studio, a valid Film Permit issued by the City of Palm Springs Film Office is required for all shoots on public and private property. Even if the location is a private residence or business, a Film Permit is required.

Procedures:

First, contact the Palm Springs Film Office at (760) 323-8272 for an application. Film Permit applications should be submitted at least three (3) business days in advance. Applications are also available for download, please click here. The City's Film Officer will discuss the particulars of your production, and let you know what if any special conditions will apply, weather or not a Palm Springs Police Department Officer is required, and any other information needed to secure the permit.

Insurance:

$1 million liability insurance with clause to additionally insure the City of Palm Springs, its officials and representatives. Student productions must provide insurance from the school they attend. Insurance information and rule and regulations are also available for download, please click here. 

Law Enforcement:

Law enforcement personnel are sometimes required for filming activities. The City of Palm Springs has its very own police department that is used. Fees for officers are invoiced separately by the Palm Springs Police Department. 

Fire Officials:

Fire Safety officers or Advisers may be required, each request for filming must be reviewed separately by the Palm Springs Fire Department. This may require a separate Palm Springs Fire Department applications. For specific information call the Fire Department (760) 323-818. Fees for the fire officials are paid separately and invoiced by the Palm Springs Fire Department.  

Filming Hours:

Normal hours for filming are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. 

Notification:

All neighbors and business within 300 foot radius of the filming location, on both sides of the street, must be notified of your filming activities by written letter with at least  an 72 hour advance notice. 

Please draft a letter on your company's letterhead. The letter must included a mention of each of the following points in order for your request to be approved. 

The name of your company, the type of filming (i.e,. commercial, feature film, etc.) the name of your production, and that you are proposing to film in their neighborhood. 

List the dates and time you propose to be on location

Describe the filming activities proposed. Include as many details as possible. Neighbors are more receptive when you are forthcoming about the total impact, rather than withholding information. Don't forget to thank them for their support and cooperation. Let them know that you are a guest in their neighborhood and if possible, invite them to watch and extend any courtesy you feel is appropriate. 

Please include the following paragraph in your letter: " If you have any questions or concerns, please call (contact name) at (phone number) or you may call the City of Palm Springs Film Office at (760) 323-8272.

Please leave the letter at the front door if no one is home. Do not place the letter in the mailbox, as this is a violation of the federal law. 

 

Film and Motion Picture Fees:

Still photography

Application Fee: $84 per production ; Location Fee -$17 per day

 

Film Motion Picture

Application Fee $168 per production ; Location Fee -$45 per production

Per week (7 day period)  $ 224
