Originally opened in 1941, the Welwood Murray Memorial Library serves three purposes. It is a branch of the main Library (and provides library services such as free WiFi, public computers and a browsing collection of national magazines and newspapers), a research library for the Palm Springs Historical Society, and a downtown tourism location from the Palm Springs Bureau of Tourism for our many visitors.

To make an appointment to access the Palm Springs historic archive and research library, contact the Palm Springs Historical Society directly. Please note that their hours are different than the building hours.

Beginnings of the Welwood Murray Memorial Library

The Welwood Murray Memorial Library opened its doors on Wednesday, February 19, 1941. It not only housed the nearly 4,000 books owned by the Library (the facility’s initial capacity was 30,000), but it also provided a downtown home for the fledgling Palm Springs Desert Museum  [which would become the Palm Springs Art Museum]. Library Director Dorothy Bear and then Palm Springs Desert Museum Director, Lloyd Mason Smith, proudly shared the dedication ceremony spotlight, knowing that this marked the beginning of a new era for both institutions.
